COLIN

As much as I hated Mr. Smith’s idea, the time had come for me to face my fears and do the necessary. I hadn’t settled on my destination yet but packing for the trip seemed therapeutic at the moment. I couldn’t stop thinking about Maya. The idea that she would be out there all alone scared me. It felt like I was failing Francis. The one thing he had asked me to do - protect his daughter - seemed impossible at this point, especially when it felt like I was being selfish by protecting myself.

I was leaving Miss Simmons behind in the hands of the most dangerous person I knew, but I had to. I had no other choice. I had to leave and protect her by getting rid of him. I could not control what would happen once I left the city, but I could control how long it would happen. I trusted Mr. Smith to do his work well, and quickly too. I needed to get done with this and move on with the rest of my life.

My life. It’s crazy how upside-down my life had turned. It was as if fate decided to betray me. I had never thought of packing my bags to move to an unknown land for another mission like this one. Every time I thought of the kind of life I wanted to live after Francis, I was moving to a beautiful cabin up the hills, far away from the loud buzz of the city. Instead, here I was, possibly preparing to move to another hole, just because of Francis Harper. It had always been for his sake before, and even now, it was all for Francis.

I scoffed at the thought of him. Being his bodyguard had been the essence of my core and still, the most dangerous thing I had done in all my years. His popularity and wealth had made him an easy target for the public, and his existence in the world of the staggeringly wealthy lot made his head worth a billion dollars, which made my life a living hell. And even now after his demise, I was still running around for his sake. I knew my life was at risk even though I still did not have any evidence against Peter Holland. But one cannot put anything past a murderer who killed his own blood.

Oh, Francis! I sighed loudly as my body fell onto the couch with a thud. You better watch out for me wherever I end up, I thought to myself as I shut my eyes. It was his time to protect me. He had no other choice as I was doing this for him. Protecting his daughter had been his last wish - at least, one of his last wishes – and it was coming at a great cost.

I did not know what else he would expect from me. Marrying his daughter was already a great task and protecting her was more than enough for a forty-four-year-old man.
